  1. Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the Area 53 web site is to allow another vehicle for the members of the Area 53 General Service Assembly to inform its members and others about Area 53 General Service activities and functions. The Web site should contain information about our service committees, ways to contact those committees and a calendar of events for activities that may be occurring throughout Area 53, the State of Ohio, East Central Region and AA as a whole.

Though all areas are autonomous, it is understood that the Area 53 web site will not intentionally violate any principles, traditions or other policies of Alcoholics Anonymous pertaining to its public relations policies.

  2. History of area53aa.org

In typical AA fashion there were several years of discussions, debates, tables and reconsiderations before it was decided at the March, 2001 Area 53 Assembly to proceed to build a basic web site. The original concept being extremely conservative in appearance and content. From that time to the writing of this page the concept has remained the same. Staying conservative. Although the appearance of the site has changed significantly, and some decisions to allow more than just Area 53 General Service Assembly content, the conservative approach still remains.
There has also been much discussion about how the Area 53 web site and its webmaster will fit into the Area structure. Until that is determined, the web site will remain essentially ad-hoc function of the Area.

  3. The Basic Operations (How it works)

At this time the webmaster has responsibility for the maintenance, appearance and content of the area53aa.org web site. To that end, the following are serving as the basic operating principles:

    1. Present as much Area 53 General Service information as possible in an easy to navigate format.

    2. Each standing committee has a dedicated page.  It is up to each committee to inform the web master of the materials or presentations they would like to present.

    3. Keep the coding simple so that whomever may follow in the webmaster position may be able to update and maintain the site quickly and easily.

    4. The web site should be hosted commercially, thereby eliminating advertisements that may give the appearance of affiliation or endorsement.

    5. Postings for the web site should include any General Service Activity whether they be GSO, Regional, Ohio State, Area, District or Group function. Other items, i.e. dances, fund raisers (other than for entities as state prior, or any non-service entity sponsored activity, will not be considered for posting.

    6. There will be no material posted that would be considered in violation of AA principles.

  4. How to Submit Materials

Submitting materials to the webmaster for use on the Web site can happen in several ways.

    1. Email the item to the webmaster of Area 53 (Ideal)

    2. Pass along a disk containing the desired item.
    3. Pass along a copy of the flyer. (Preferably in black and white for crisp reproduction)
    4. Pass along the information about your event either by email, snail mail or phone call.
About items to be posted to the web site.
    a. Flyers, announcements, etc. should be submitted in PDF format.(Ideal)
    b. If unable to produce a PDF file, submit the item in its natural file form. i.e. Microsoft word document. (If the webmaster is unable to work with it, you will be contacted)
    c. Always consider dial up users when submitting an item. Very large files (containing pictures or multiple colors) can be painful to download.
